Kolam: A traditional South Indian floor art

Introduction:

Kolam, a traditional South Indian floor art commonly practiced in Tamil Nadu, embodies not only aesthetics but also philosophy, mathematics, and science. In ancient times, Tamil Culture dictated the feeding of 1000 souls daily through Kolam, traditionally made of rice flour. Drawing Kolam on the house threshold provided sustenance for insects like ants, birds, and tiny creatures.

Drawing Kolam on the threshold welcomes Goddess Mahalakshmi into the home, as per Hindu beliefs. She is revered as the deity who brings prosperity, wealth, and happiness to the family.

Chikku Kolam:

Creating Chikku Kolam demands focus, concentration, problem-solving skills, and physical strength due to its requirement for precision and attention to detail. Within Chikku Kolam, mathematical concepts such as Fibonacci's series, symmetry, and infinite patterns are visibly embedded.

Chikku Kolam, characterized by dots and curved lines, symbolizes the philosophy of life by starting and ending at the same point.
