Traditional Sweets & Snacks
In ancient times, our culture had a variety of sweets and snacks that were enjoyed during festivities and for their health benefits. Some were made specifically for health reasons, such as black urad dal laddoos, peanut laddoos, and mixed nuts laddoos. A popular sweet in Southern India, called oppattuu or poli, is made with lentils, jaggery, and maida and is often served during special occasions. This traditional sweet is still enjoyed by people of all ages.
During my childhood, around the time of Diwali, my mother would make large boxes of murukku, a popular snack that could be saved and enjoyed for up to 20 days after the festival. To maintain the authenticity and tradition, I began learning these recipes from my mother and aunts, in order to recreate the same authentic taste.
